Forum and IRC channel rules

While we generally support freedom of speech, we do not expect hosts to tolerate abuse from their guests. At the same time, we do not think hosts should provoke their guests.

We invite people to interact with and join our community provided they show respect towards others and our rules. We expect everyone behave with civility.

If asking a question, please provide your most relevant jurisdiction (eg your county, local government area, state, province, territory, country). Laws can vary wildly between states in federations such as Australia, Canada, Germany and the United States; and between constituent countries or territories such as in the United Kingdom. The European Union adds further complexity.

It is also important to remember that most of us are not lawyers.

Although some community members may be admitted to practice, and others are law students or graduates, we cannot and will not provide legal advice.

If you are an admitted lawyer, you must not offer legal services or provide legal advice.

If you need a lawyer, do not attempt to solicit legal assistance, but use an appropriate referral service.

With this in mind, we have developed these rules for our community. Attempts to break or bypass these rules will not be tolerated, and moderators will intervene at their discretion.
  • Be polite.
  • Do not purport to provide legal advice or advertise yourself as a lawyer, whether you are admitted to practice or not.
  • Do not ask for legal advice or solicit the services of lawyers. There are referral services and telephone directories for this.
  • Do not post links to or request material that is:
    • illegal or suspect, or
    • discriminatory in nature, or
    • sexually explicit.
  • Do not assume that everyone is American: we aim to be inclusive and have people from all around the world.
  • Avoid engaging in arguments designed to elicit knee-jerk reactions.
  • Avoid discriminatory or derogatory remarks unless:
    • part of a relevant quote, or
    • clearly sarcastic.
    • The environment for participation should be welcoming to all individuals.
    • If a remark is unnecessary and offensive, it's probably best to keep it to yourself.
    • Please express yourself as clearly as possible:
    • Avoid using excessive abbreviations and acronyms.
    • One sentence per line is preferred.
    • Lengthy blocks of texts should have sufficient grammar to make them understandable.
    • Try to keep sentence simple and direct where possible.
    • Discussions should be kept in English unless absolutely necessary.
    • All topics related to law are welcome.
    • Off-topic conversations are encouraged, but should give way to law-related topics where appropriate.
    • Avoid contentious moral, political or social issues unless they can be clearly linked to a legal issue.
    • Advocating or promoting organised pseudolegal commercial arguments identified in Meads v Meads [2012] ABQB 571 and related cases is likely to lead to a ban, at the discretion of the moderators.

Good guidelines to live by. This should be a sticky!

Also I'd like to say we're not attorneys on this forum for the most part, so we cannot give legal advice.

Good Writeup!
